About Setouchi region

Setouchi Inland Sea

Setouchi region consists of the Seto Inland Sea and seven prefectures ( Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tokushima, Kagawa and Ehime prefectures ) surrounding the sea.

The Sea is the largest Inland Sea in Japan, however, it's waveless and very calm and the climate around here is so mild.

There are thousands of islands in the Sea and these islands and are introduced by the New York Times as the 7th place of the "52 places to Go in 2019".

Setouchi region gives the tourists with a range of opportunities to enjoy the experience both of Japanese tradition and modernism. This region contains UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Himeji Castle, Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima Genbaku Dome on the other hand recently especially Setouchi islands has been known by modern art.

The Setouchi Triennale 2019 is held in this Setouchi area.

Getting there

You can get to the festival sites from many directions.

And this time, let me introduce the simple and easy way to get to the several sites of the festival from Tokyo or Osaka area.

When you are coming from Tokyo or Osaka area, we recommend to travel via Uno port accessed from Okayama bullet train station. 

You can visit Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima ( the largest one of the participating islands ) by ferries from the port.

 

Getting to Uno port

From Tokyo station: ( takes about 4.5 hours ) 

  1. Tokyo station to Okayama station: 3 hours and 13 minutes ride on Shinkansen train
  2. Okayama station to Chayamachi station: about 20 minutes ride on JR Seto-Ohashi Line
  3. Chayamachi station to Uno station: about 25 minutes ride on JR Uno-port Line 
  4. Uno station to Uno port: 5 minutes walk
In this route, you can use Japan Rail Pass ( Nationwide )* from Tokyo to Uno station and for its returning.

  3. Chayamachi station to Uno station: about 25 minutes ride on JR Uno-port Line 
  4. Uno station to Uno port: 5 minutes walk
