Free Wi-Fi is available for some Shinkansen, bullet trains in the following areas and routes.

Japan Railway companies have a plan to have free Wi-Fi available at all Shinkansen and Shinkansen stations by March, 2021 (for some areas, by the end of March, 2020). Until that time, you have to be careful that all Shinkansen and stations do not have free Wifi service.

Currently, free Wifi service is available in the following areas.

    • Plan to implement free Wi-Fi service in all Shinkansen bullet trains by the end of March, 2020
  • Sanyo shinkansen
    • Plan to implement free Wi-Fi service in all Shinkansen bullet trains by the end of March, 2020
  • Kyushu shinkansen
    • Plan to implement free Wi-Fi service in all Shinkansen bullet trains by the end of March, 2020
  • Tohoku/Yamagata/Akita shinkansen
    • Plan to implement free Wi-Fi service in all Shinkansen bullet trains by the end of March, 2020

    • Plan to implement a new train with free Wi-Fi service by the end of March, 2021

You need to register your e-mail or SNS account in order to use Shinkansen free Wi-Fi service.

Here are steps:

  1. Connect to "Shinkansen_Free_Wi-Fi" from Wi-Fi networks.
  2. Register your e-mail address or your SNS account
  3. That's it. Ready to user Wi-Fi now.

Note: You can use this service as many times as you want. However, you have to re-login every 30 minutes.

  2. Connect to "JR-EAST_FREE_Wi-Fi"
  3. Activate your browser and follow the instructions on the screen
    You need to register your e-mail address for your first time

Note: You can use free Wi-Fi as many time as you want. You have to re-login every 3 hours.

  4. That's it. Ready to user Wi-Fi now.

Note: You can use this service as many times as you want. However, you have to re-login every 60 minutes.

 

Other free Wi-Fi spot at/around station

Major stations have cafes and restaurants at and around station. And these cafes and restaurants may provide free Wi-Fi service.

For example, Shinagawa station has Starbucks, both inside of Shinkansen ticket gate and outside of Shinkansen ticket gate.

And, at airports, such as Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, and Kansai Airport, there are usually free Wi-Fi service.
